Parkland is a low-density city at the top of Broward County, about 30 miles north of Fort Lauderdale, whose northern boundary is the Broward and Palm Beach county line and whose western edge runs into the Everglades. It was chartered on July 10, 1963 out of land put up by farmer and rancher Bruce Blount, who had been calling the place BBB Ranches. Zoning written to protect a park-like character kept stores and traffic lights out of the city until the mid-1990s, and through its first decade horses outnumbered people.

- On July 10, 1963 a city charter passed the Florida Legislature as House Bill 2079, guided through the House by Representative Emerson Alsworth.
- The founder was Bruce Blount, a local farmer, rancher, veteran and politician, who had put up tracts of his own land under the name BBB Ranches while seeking official recognition.
- Representative Alsworth wrote the name Parkland into the bill, a description fitting Blount's proposal for an undeveloped town set apart from the Broward County building boom.
- Governor C. Farris Bryant recognized Parkland as a city of the state of Florida on August 12, 1963. Blount became its inaugural mayor, having previously served as mayor and city commissioner of Pompano Beach.
- There were no stores and no traffic lights in Parkland until the mid-1990s and early 2000s, when the large Heron Bay and Parkland Isles developments were built.
